How to search text inside screenshots on iPhone
You took a screenshot of an order number, a recipe or an address weeks ago. Now you need it, and scrolling through thousands of photos is not an option. The good news: your iPhone can already search the text inside your images.
Search with the Photos app
Since iOS 15, the Photos app reads text in your photos and screenshots on the device.
- Open Photos.
- Tap the Search button.
- Type a word you remember from the screenshot, such as an invoice number or a shop name.
Photos shows images that contain that text, often with the matching word highlighted. This works well for clear, printed text.
Tip: search for something specific. “4839” finds an invoice faster than “invoice”, which may match hundreds of images.
Search from anywhere with Spotlight
You don’t even need to open Photos.
- Swipe down on the Home Screen to open Spotlight.
- Type the word.
- Scroll to the photos results.
Copy the text from a screenshot
Once you find it, you can copy the text instead of retyping it:
- Open the screenshot.
- Tap the Live Text button in the corner, or touch and hold the text.
- Select the words and tap Copy.
When the built-in search isn’t enough
Photos search is genuinely good, and for many people it is all they need. It gets harder when:
- Screenshots are mixed with personal photos. Useful references get buried among thousands of pictures.
- Your important things live in different apps. The screenshot is in Photos, the PDF is in Files, the reply you send every week is in Notes, and the price list is in a WhatsApp chat. Each app has its own search, so you have to remember where you put something, not just what it said.
- You need to send the item, not just find it. Finding a screenshot is step one. Sharing the original file or copying the right text is often the real task.
- Handwriting or small text. Very small, blurred or handwritten text may not be recognized.
A single place for the things you reuse
If you keep sending the same screenshots, documents and replies, it can help to keep those few things together, separate from everything else.
We’re building Suvadi for exactly this. You save the replies, screenshots, PDFs and files you reuse into one private library on your iPhone. Suvadi reads the text inside screenshots and PDFs on your device, shows you why each result matched, and lets you copy or share it straight from the search results. It doesn’t need an account, and your content never leaves your device.
Whichever route you choose, the key habit is the same: save the things you’ll need again somewhere you trust, and search for a specific word you’ll remember.
Suvadi keeps the replies, documents and screenshots you reuse in one private library on your iPhone, searchable by the words inside them.
